This week’s movie news includes an update on Deadpool, casting news for the new Mary Poppins movie and a couple of trailers for very different films.
Deadpool remains at the top of the US box office and confidently strides towards global takings of almost $500 million. The film was considered to be a risk for 20th Century Fox but has surpassed all expectations. Find my review here and a brief look at the consequences of the success of Deadpool here.
Emily Blunt is reported to step into the shoes of Julie Andrews as original super nanny Mary Poppins, in the new movie which is reportedly set 20 years after the original and would see Mary return to the Banks family during the Depression era. If all goes to plan, the new movie would definitely qualify as a belated sequel.
The Rock will battle nature again in a sequel to San Andreas, a modern day disaster film which took a healthy $470 million last summer. This time the action is expected to revolve around the Ring of Fire, a nickname given to a series of fault lines and volcanoes which circle the Pacific Ocean.
Check the date; confirm it’s not April 1st. Double check. Ready? Here’s the trailer for Kindergarten Cop 2, starring Dolph Lundgren. Straight to DVD later this year. (This is not an April’s Fools).
Now for something completely different (could there ever be a similar follow-up to a trailer for Kindergarten Cop 2???), here’s the first trailer for the Absolutely Fabulous movie, which reunites the stars of the classic BBC television series for a silver screen adventure, set to land July 1st in the UK.
Two sequels officially began filming this week- Star Wars: Episode VIII and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, the latter of which gave us a wonderful little promo image.
In Memory of…
George Gaynes passed away on Feb 15th at his home in Washington. Despite having a long and varied career, many will remember him as Commandant Eric Lassard in the Police Academy film series.
